Wie bringt man temperierten Instrumenten Mikrotöne bei?

Das gängige europäische Instrumentarium war zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts weitgehend etabliert und fertig entwickelt. Das 12-tönige Tonsystem hatte sich als Standard durchgesetzt und das Instrumentarium war darauf optimiert. Vorstöße und Experimente für alternative Tonsysteme und speziell dafür konstruierte Instrumente fanden nur wenig Beachtung. Erst gegen Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts und im 21. Jahrhundert drangen Initiativen, die Grenzen des 12-tönigen Tonsystems zu überschreiten – inspiriert beispielsweise von außereuropäischen Musikkulturen und der Klangforschung – immer nachdrücklicher und systematischer durch. Im Zuge dessen nahm das Bemühen um einen Ausbau des vorhandenen Instrumentariums wieder an Fahrt auf. Der Artikel stellt exemplarisch solche Entwicklungen von Instrumenten, welche diese für Mikrotöne flexibilisieren, aus der jüngsten Zeit vor. Zum Beispiel die Glissando-Flöte, mikrotonale Gitarren und eine Software für mikrotonales Keyboard.

By the beginning of the 20th century, the common European instruments had been largely established and fully developed: 12-tone equal temperament had become the standard tone system and the instruments were optimised for it. Advances and experiments regarding alternative tone systems as well as instruments specifically constructed for them attracted little attention. It would take until the end of the 20th century and the early 21st century before initiatives to exceed 12 ET – inspired, for example, by non-European musical cultures and sonic research – became more forceful and systematic. As a result, efforts to expand the existing instruments gained momentum again. The article showcases recent developments of instruments designed to facilitate the performance of microtones. These include, for instance, the glissando flute, microtonal guitars as well as software for microtonal keyboards.
